This second release in the Open_Music LAYERS series features three threads of improvisations: “Katabasis,” initiated by Roderik Vanderstraeten (synthesizer/sound design) on 22 April and “Deep Sea (Insects),” initiated by Michael Kiedaisch (vibes/percussion) one day earlier. “Noema” was a collaboration with Roderik and Felix Borel, to which Michael later added a layer of metallic percussion.

“Katabasis” began as a sound design with many layers, including drumset. Scott chose to double a low synth line from the mix with a swarm of 4 celli, after which Roderik took away the pulsing drums and reposted his sound design with celli. Felix Borel added three violin lines, Michael Kiedaisch later added bass drum and Felix Behringer bass clarinet. “Katabasis” is presented first in its most complex version, along with two alternate mixes from earlier stages of development.

The two “Deep Sea” pieces began with a vibraphone track from Michael, to which Felix Borel first offered a radically contrasting track with violin. Roderik added a synthesizer complement to Michael’s original and Scott later added a dialogue to Felix’s violin.
