LAYERS 5 features small formations, most compositions being made by only two musicians, often with two tracks pre-mixed by a single contributor, determining the macro-development of the piece. Roderik Vanderstraeten, playing a Moog Subsequent 37 is the common actor in five of the seven tracks, giving the set as a whole a distinctly electro-acoustic character.

Felix Borel contributed two contrasting improvisations, the soaring "Lyrisch" and the driving solo improvisation "Go go go!" Michael Kiedaisch added a vibraphone layer to "Lyrisch" and "Tales" is a based on a multi-track studio improvisation of his, using predominately kalimba and prepared piano. "Broken Lyric" and the two "Elements" are solo cello improvisations by Scott Roller, with electronic interpolations on those lines by Roderik Vanderstraeten.
