about

Felix Behringer, composer/producer of Prospects 5: Cartography

For my issue of the AUSSICHTEN series, Prospects #5, I wanted to give my colleagues not musical but visual input. For this, I first made three formally identical, graphic scores as watercolors. In a second step, these watercolors were photographed and animated with a video editing program, so that the images were filmed simultaneously in a bird's eye view. Paths and trails were created along imaginative signs and shapes, as if one were following the roads on a map with one's finger, hence the title Cartography.

Since this animation process of all three watercolors happened with the same temporal-formal structure, the musicians were free to choose one of the watercolors for their interpretation, and afterwards the results could be freely mixed, as happened in Cartography Excursion I. Felix Borel (violin), Michael Kiedaisch (percussion) and Scott Roller (cello) each independently recorded a version of the cartographies, and the recordings were subsequently superimposed unedited.

In Excursion II, in addition to the visual input, the musicians were given a thinned-out mix of Excursion I and were now asked to create an interpretation again, inspired by sound and image. In addition to the previously mentioned musicians, who once again delivered a new interpretation on other or extended instruments, Roderik Vanderstraeten (synthesizer) and myself (bass clarinet) joined in. From all interpretations, the mix to Cartography Excursion II was created. The video is also a mix of all three cartographies.
